Volunteering on Brokkestøylen

Brokkestøylen has benefitted greatly from the zealous enthousiasm of its volunteers. Some have come in the main-season, helping in the kitchen and organising children activities, others took on maintenance and building tasks, and again others unleashed their creativity, leaving their artistic touch on the place. Both groups and individuals have come. I would like to thank all for the work they did, the dreams they helped realise and last but not least, the memorable times spent together.

So, I hope you also consider staying here and helping out! For the summer of 2010, there are a lot of projects planned, which I could not possibly do by myself. In the foreseason, until mid-june tasks include: preparing for the farm animals to come, mounting the laptents, putting grass on the roof of two small campinghuts, moving the canoes into the mountains and constructing a basecamp-shelter far in the wilderness. In the mainseason many families come to Brokkestøylen. I need help in the kitchen, with animal care, poniriding and children animation. The campground needs to be tended and at the end of everyday there is some to clean. In the fall, the terrain has to be made winterproof. This is also a great time for doing time-consuming creative things!

Volunteers have a room in my farmhouse or the cabin next door. The house is situated idyllically on the flanks of the Setesdal valley with a breath-taking view on Rysstad. In the morning we wake around 9, enjoy our breakfast and leave around 10. Often times there will be several volunteers - summer 2009 there were 16 volunteers staying for a week or more. Working days are often long, but varied. You'll be doing different things everyday keeping account of your preferences. In the evening we dine together and may have time for a little sight-seeing excursion. Two days a week you are free to draw your own plans without me - great outdoor opportunities!

Brokkestøylen covers your basic food and accomodation. The trip here, you have to finance yourself. Getting here is easy, flying in to Kristiansand with KLM from Amsterdam (about 250€), Oslo Torp with Ryanair from Düsseldorf Weeze (about 100€) or taking the ferries from Hirtshals (Colorline) or Hanstholm (Fjordline). From downtown Kristiansand, there are regular and direct busconnections to Brokke (see here and here). For more information on the Setesdal, have a look at www.setesdal.com. Or check out the pictures from Brokke!

Hope to receive you here!
